Hilary

HILARY CHARLESWORTH

Hilary Charlesworth is the Patron of the Women’s Legal Centre. 

Hilary is an internationally respected human rights and lawyer.  She is a Professor in RegNet and Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice at the Australian National University.  She also holds an appointment as Professor of International Law and Human Rights in the Faculty of Law at that University. 

Hilary has worked on issues such as the relevance of feminist theory to understanding international law, the structure of the international human rights system, and the protection of human rights in Australia.  Her research projects have included the legitimacy of UN Security Council decisions, the impact of international law on Australian law and the role of women in international dispute resolution. 

Hilary was the inuagural President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law.  She has been Co-Editor of the Australian Yearbook of International Law since 1996 and a member of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law since 1999.  She has worked with various non-governmental human rights organisations on ways to implement international human rights standards and was chair of the ACT Government's inquiry into an ACT bill of rights, which culminated in the adoption of the ACT Human Rights Act 2004. 

Hilary has held visiting appointments at Washington & Lee School of Law, Harvard Law School, NYU Global Law School and in 2005 was the 24th Wayne Morse Professor at the University of Oregon.  In 2005, she was awarded a Federation Fellowship by the Australian Research Council.
